Hot Lap: Mason Prater

Tell us about your racing background and what brought you to the Lucas Oil Regional Series:
My name is Mason Prater, I am 11 years old and I have been racing for 6 years and this will be my 7th season. I started out with an outlaw kart and then moved into a JR1. In 2014, I won the Lucas Oil Championship in the JR1. I have raced 3 karts in the series and am now racing a mod. I started racing the regional series in California because there is a lot of competition and that makes racing exciting.

When you're not at the track, what can we find you doing?
When I am not at the track I play tackle football, Xbox and play with my friends.

Family and friends play a big role on most regional teams. How important is your family & friends to your success and what roles do each of them play on race weekends?
My family gives me a lot of support and they make sure that I always feel good before the races. My friends also give me a lot of support and always congratulate me on how good I do no matter what place I get. My dad works on my kart and also a long time family friend Hutch. They are the ones that work so hard to make sure my kart is running the best that it can. My sister Emily is also a huge supporter, she never wants to miss a race.

Who is a driver that you look up to/admire and why?
My favorite driver is Kyle Leduc because I like his driving technique. He has an aggressive style and I would like to drive like him.

What qualities/skills do you think make a driver successful?
The best skills that make a good driver are to have clean passes and stay smooth.

What/who is your biggest challenge on the track?
Corners are my biggest challenge on the track. My biggest competitor last season was Bronson Chiaramonte. We had some good clean battles last season.

What does a typical weekend at the track look like for you? Walk us through how your weekend works.
A typical weekend at the track involves us making the long drive from Arizona, setting up the pits and lots of playing with my friends. After all of the races are done my friends and I like to collect the wreckage and get it signed by the drivers.

Any goals for the next few years and beyond?
This is my first season in my mod kart and I am really happy to be a part of Mod Kids USA. My goal with my kart is to really learn the kart this season and drive smooth so I can get to the podium sometime in the near future. I will have 5 years in the mod class so I am excited to know that I am in a class that I am going to stay in for quite a while.

We know it takes a lot of support to race and you seem to backed by some great companies. Is there anyone you would like to thank for their support?
I would like to thank my mom, dad, Hutch, Tire Masters, Kevin McMullen, M3 Collision & Painting, ASC and Mod Kids USA.
